Week number 5
For history we learned about the discovery of the New World, also known as the Americas. We learned how the Europeans brought things to the Americas like diseases. The Europeans were harsh to the Indians and made them slaves. We learned about the conquistadors, and the explorers. We also learned about city of Roanoke.
For English, we're learning about types of nouns like concrete nouns, abstract nouns, compound nouns, and possessive nouns.
For reading, we're starting 'Rascal' by Sterling North. We've read chapters 'May' and 'June'.
For 8th grade spelling, we're studying the 'i before e rule'. Our test was on Friday.
In science, we took our test. We are learning about climate and better ways to study. We discovered that the brain can retain more information by not cramming the night or day before the test. The best way to study, is to get multiple senses involved including writing and active mnemonic devices. It is recommended that we take 5 minutes every night to look over our notes and verbally review with someone to make sure that information is retained. Mr. Sielaff is keeping a classroom set of note cards with information for this chapter in Science on Climate. He is encouraging us to quiz each other with the note cards we created and to duplicate them in our notes.
On Tuesday and Thursday, we had two football games. On Tuesday, we played Emmaus and we lost 28-8. I had the only touchdown and the two point conversion. Brendan and Gabe both had an interception. But on Thursday, we won 34-27. Cody and Collin had had one touchdown and pat. Ryan had a catching touchdown and Brendan had a rushing touchdown.
